Understanding climate resilience: Insights from REGILIENCE Citizen Survey in Central Macedonia

In 2024, REGILIENCE conducted a citizen survey to better understand public awareness of climate risks and adaptation needs. Our initial assessment focused on Central Macedonia, Greece, a region facing persistent flooding, transport infrastructure challenges, and high energy consumption.

What we learned

  • Citizens are familiar with sustainability concepts, but awareness of climate resilience remains limited.
  • Top climate concerns include heatwaves, rising temperatures, and droughts, whereas coastal protection is seen as a lower priority.
  • Urgent adaptation measures identified: water management and sustainable consumption.
  • Women and younger individuals express greater concern about climate change impacts.
  • Social media, the internet, and TV serve as primary sources of climate information.

What’s Next?

Building on these insights, we will launch a second citizen survey this year to deepen our understanding of climate resilience awareness and engagement. By involving citizens and local authorities, we aim to develop more effective adaptation strategies and bridge knowledge gaps.
